Summary
A Chartered Manager takes responsibility for people, projects, operations and/ or services to deliver organisational success; they receive professional recognition of their ability to deliver impact, behave ethically and demonstrate their commitment to continual learning and development. The programme will equip you to deal with challenges in management practice. It has also been developed in consultation with local/ global partners and professional bodies, and has been mapped to Chartered Management Institute (CMI) standards. This course offers a credit-based scheme, comprising of modules of mostly 20 credits.
This apprenticeship is ideal for professional managers who want to develop their management/ leadership skills, knowledge, self-awareness and behaviours. These can include:
- Setting direction and strategic decision- making
- Building/ leading teams
- Developing skills, motivating others and clear communication
- Fostering inclusive and ethical cultures
- Project/ financial management
- Innovation/ risk management
- Developing relationships
You will complete the Level 6 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship Standard.
- This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and off the job training.
- You need to have an employer to support your apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant job role.
- The typical length of this apprenticeship is 42 months.

Entry Requirements
- GCSE Grade 4/C in Maths and English (Language or Literature) or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English
- If a learner has not achieved English or Maths at Level 2 (4/C or above at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2), they will have to attend Functional Skills sessions which will be held on an additional day to their regular college attendance. Candidates will also take an English and Maths initial assessment during enrolment, irrespective of previous grades/ qualifications.
- Candidates must also be employed in an appropriate job role and have a Level 3 (or higher) qualification, such as A-Levels. Candidates who do not hold a Level 3 qualification but have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in management will also be considered.
- Candidates must attend an interview with the Delivery Team as part of the application process. Interviews typically take place in August.
Candidates will be embarking upon a challenging course and will also need to balance personal situations (home and paid work) with the amount of degree work required during the course. This could be an extra 12 or more hours per week.
All candidates must have the support of their employer as the apprenticeship will involve regular progress reviews, conducting a work-based project and building a portfolio of work-based evidence. Also, apprentices will be required to complete job-related assignments that may require them to have greater access to management activities.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded with a Level 6 Chartered Manager Apprenticeship Standard, which includes the following:
- CMI Level 5 Diploma in Leadership & Management
- BA Leadership & Management Degree
- If not previously achieved, Level 2 in English and Maths
Completion of this programme also allows successful apprentices to gain ‘Chartered Manager’ status with the CMI, after successfully passing the End Point Assessment (EPA) alongside gaining an honours degree. To gain the knowledge and skills required for the apprenticeship, apprentices will complete the BA (Hons) in Leadership & Management degree (validated by the UEA and in partnership with the Chartered Management Institute). During the programme, apprentices will have Affiliate membership of the CMI, and upon successful completion of the programme, they will have the option to apply for membership of the Chartered Management Institute (Please see www.managers.org.uk for current CMI membership fees)
Objective
The following content will be covered throughout the apprenticeship programme:
Year 1 modules:
- Academic and professional skills
- Leading change in organisations
- Employment and Contract Law
- Organisational behaviour
- Marketing principles and practice
Year 2 modules:
- Research skills for the Business sector
- Marketing in a digital age
- Leading and managing people
- Project management
*Operations management - Management accounting and finance
Year 3 modules:
- Applied psychology in the workplace
- Developing ethical leadership
- Strategic management
- Developing skills in others
- Dissertation/ extended work- based project
Assessment
Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace and in college. Apprentices will be required to attend college-based sessions as part of their training, whilst also completing off-the-job training in the workplace. You will also complete assessments and observations in the workplace.
A wide range of assessment tools are used throughout the degree programme, including:
- Exams (open and closed book)
- Assignments
- Work-based portfolios
- Group work exercises
- Presentations
At the end of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will be ready for the End Point Assessment (EPA) which includes:
- Work- based project, which takes place towards the end of the apprenticeship and is assessed by an independent assessor
- Portfolio of evidence containing complete/ discrete pieces of work to cover the whole apprenticeship standard
- Interview with an independent assessor to discuss the portfolio
- 15- minute presentation to mainly focus on the work undertaken in the project
Progression
The BA (Hons) Leadership & Management Degree focuses on academic, personal and professional growth and therefore offers a number of valuable progression routes. You could consider specialist postgraduate qualifications according to your own career aspirations. As a newly qualified Chartered Manager, you may also decide to pursue further professional management qualifications.
Career Progression
Upon successful completion, candidates will hold a Level 6 Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship, as well as the BA (Hons) Leadership & Management Degree, and the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership. These well-recognised qualifications will enhance your ability to contribute effectively to your organisation and thus the possibility of progression into supervisory and management roles.
Fees

Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
For employers with less than 50 employees who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £1,100
For an employer with more than 50 employees a 5% charge will be implemented regardless of the age of the apprentice which in this case would be £1,100.
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £22,000.
Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
