Summary
Apprentices on this course will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours relating to the Early Years Educator Standard and Level 3 Early Years Educator qualification. This is a core requirement to work in a range of day care settings, children centres, pre-schools, reception classes and nurseries, along with a full DBS check carried out by the employer. Apprentices on this course will learn how to work independently or to supervise others to deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).
Course content includes:
- How to support children's learning and development
- How to work with the key professionals and families who support children
- How to encourage children to participate in planned activities that reflect the stages of development
- Understand legislation relating to the safeguarding, protection and welfare of children
- Follow legislation relating to equality, diversity and inclusive practice
You will complete Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship standard.
This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and off the job training.
- You will also develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
- You need to have an employer to support your apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant job role.
- The typical length of this apprenticeship course is 24 months.
- This course has multiple start dates throughout the year- the main intake is in October 2024.

Entry Requirements
- GCSE Grade 4/C in Maths and English (Language or Literature) or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English
- If in exceptional circumstances a learner has not achieved English or Maths at Level 2 (4/C or above at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2), they will have to attend Functional Skills sessions which will be held on an additional day to their regular college attendance.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be awarded with a Level 3 Early Years Educator Apprenticeship Standard, which includes the following:
- Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF) or Emergency Paediatric First Aid (this is a mandatory requirement to achieve the overall qualification).
Apprentices must have their English and Maths grades in place before taking their EPA, as these are essential criteria for taking the assessments.
Assessment
Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace and in college. Apprentices will be required to attend college-based sessions as part of their training, whilst also completing off-the-job training in the workplace. You will also complete assessments and observations in the workplace.
At the end of the apprenticeship you will complete an End Point Assessment (EPA) which will consist of:
- 80- minute observation and questioning session with an independent assessor
- 90- minute professional discussion with an independent assessor
Progression
This course should support a learner’s progression which may include:
- The skills to further develop a specialism, such as Key Worker, Manager or Forest School Co-ordinator.
- Apprentices may choose further study at a higher level, such as a Foundation Degree in Early Years or a top- up to a BA in Childhood Studies.
Career Progression
Career progression may include continuation, development or promotion at work or within this sector, such as Nursery Supervisor, Nursery Manager, Pre-School Manager/ Co-ordinator or Family Worker.
Fees
Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
For employers with less than 50 employees who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £350.
For an employer with more than 50 employees a 5% charge will be implemented regardless of the age of the apprentice which in this case would be £350.
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £7,000.
Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
