Summary

Healthcare Support Workers work in a range of settings, such as hospitals, community clinics, health centres, individual homes, nursing/care homes, hospices, mental health settings, and GP surgeries. They will report to a registered healthcare practitioner who will supervise their work. On this course, you'll work as part of a team providing high quality, compassionate care to individuals. You will carry out routine clinical duties such as monitoring an individual’s conditions (blood pressure, temperature or weight), and checking progress, comfort and wellbeing. They may also help individuals to eat, drink, wash, dress or go to the toilet, whilst following a care plan. Job roles can include Healthcare Assistant, Healthcare Support Worker, Nursing Assistant or Nursing Auxiliary.

  • Working to best practice

You will complete the Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship Standard.

  • This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and off the job training.
  • You will also develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
  • You need to have an employer to support your apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant job role.
  • The typical length of this apprenticeship course is 15- 18 months.
  • This course has multiple start dates throughout the year.

Entry Requirements

  • Minimum Grade 2/E in Maths and English (Language or Literature) or Level 1 Functional Skills English and Maths
    In order to enrol onto an apprenticeship, you need to be employed in a relevant job role and undertake a range of tasks which would enable you to complete the qualification.

Learning Outcomes

For the full Apprenticeship, learners will complete:

  • Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship Standard
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in English
  • Level 1 Functional Skills in Maths
  • Care Certificate

Apprentices will also work towards Level 2 Maths and English prior to completion of the apprenticeship.

Assessment

Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace and in college. Apprentices will be required to attend college-based sessions as part of their training, whilst also completing off-the-job training in the workplace. You will also complete assessments and observations in the workplace.

At the end of the apprenticeship you will complete an End Point Assessment (EPA) which consists of:

  • A 1- hour multiple choice test
  • A 2- hour practical observation in the workplace
  • A portfolio of evidence and a 1- hour interview with an independent assessor
  • The Care Certificate is a Gateway requirement and can be delivered by the employer or by City College Norwich

Progression

This course should support a learner’s progression which may include:

  • Continuation, development or promotion at work or within this sector, which may include the Level 3 Senior Healthcare Support Worker apprenticeship.
  • The skills to develop a specialism, such as Level 4 Healthcare Assistant Practitioner or Nursing Associate.

Career Progression

Career progression may include continuation, development or promotion at work or within the health sector.

Fees

Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
 
For employers with less than 50 employees who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £200.
 
For an employer with more than 50 employees a 5% charge will be implemented regardless of the age of the apprentice which in this case would be £200.
 
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £4,000.
 
Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
