Summary
A short course to introduce you to the basics of British Sign Language. Covering topics such as how to introduce yourself, describing pets and animals, describe a room, make some conversation, ask someone how they like their coffee and more. Learners will gain the ability to establish some basic communication skills with Deaf/HoH people. Fingerspelling, basic placement, description such as colour, long/short (i.e hair) big/small (i.e T.V). This course is a brilliant place to start if you are interested in British Sign Language and want to learn more!
Week 1 - What is BSL and why do we use it? (Basic Introduction) The fingerspelling alphabet and spelling your name the Deaf way. Introducing myself signs, followed by putting these together in practice.
Week 2 – How do we ask a question in BSL and why is it so different to English? Basic questions and answers, including signs such as ‘like’/’want’. ‘don’t like/’don’t want’
Week 3 – Food and Drink. What drink would you like? How do you take your coffee? Some basic food signs.
Week 4 – What does your cat/dog look like? Pets and animals. Signing description with some placement.
Week 5 – What does your house look like? Description of rooms and buildings. Some basic house and home signs.
Week 6 – What are your hobbies and interests? Some basic hobbies and interests signs (Sport, art/craft, T.V/ Books etc) Why do you like to do XYZ?

Progression
This course will provide students with solid grounding for moving on to a Level 1 accreditation in BSL, if they wish.
