Summary

The course begins with a Unit that focuses on developing Learning Support Practitioners' own learning skills, moves to a focus on what it means to support learning, and then progresses to a range of optional units that enable candidates to explore in depth specific neurodiversities including dyslexia, ADHD, dyspraxia and autistic spectrum disorder. An observation of learning support practice is required as part of the "Preparing to support learning" unit.

Entry Requirements

This qualification is for CCN staff only, for those employed as a Learning Support Practitioner. There is no prior knowledge required for this qualification. There is an expectation that applicants have literacy skills appropriate to a level 2 (GCSE-equivalent) programme; we use an initial assessment process to establish this and will ask applicants for evidence of a Level 2 English language and maths qualification, or BKSB assessment indicating level 2 competencies. A short writing task, and a self-evaluation of digital literacy is also included in the initial assessment prior to interview for a place on the programme.

At Level 2, the qualification descriptors expect candidates on the programme to build knowledge and understanding of facts, procedures and ideas in the area of study in order to complete well-defined tasks and address straightforward problems. Candidates will be able to interpret relevant information and ideas, to select and use relevant cognitive and practical skills to complete well-defined tasks/inform actions, and will be able to identify how effective their actions have been.

Learning Outcomes

The aim of the qualification is to enable learners to:

  • understand how to support other people to learn
  • recognise a range of challenging issues that may affect people's ability to learnt
  • identify ways in which you can help others to overcome these issue.

Objective

Individual Units have specific learning objectives and assessment criteria. The Units of study are:

Developing personal learning skills
Preparing to support learning
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Awareness
Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Awareness
Dyslexia Awareness
Dyspraxia Awareness

Assessment

The qualification is assessed through a portfolio of evidence with a range of evidence-types including worksheets, questions & discussion, photographs, artefacts from practice, workbook activities, observation records, case-studies, professional reflections, graphic organisers, SWOT analysis, individual development plan and recorded professional discussion(s).

For written assessments, candidates will need to complete relevant reading and research to support their learning, and to acknowledge these sources through academic writing conventions (relevant to the level of study). Assessed tasks should be completed independently, with minimal support, and practical assessments will take place in a real environment (simulation is not allowed).
