Course description: 

This course includes the practical and theoretical study of dance as well as plenty of performance opportunities, including becoming part of our theatre company, Platform Productions.

The main dance styles taught are Jazz and Contemporary as these styles provide the best bases for further study in dance.Theory based work will also underpin practical skills.

As a member of Platform Productions students will have the opportunity to develop a range of dance, academic and communication skills, appropriate to working in the industry. You will also perform in public performances in our state of the art theatre, take part in trips to the theatre and professional practitioner workshops. Platform Productions embraces the talents of young people and provides a hub for learning, training and development. You will gain all the necessary skills and experiences within a working theatre.

Key tasks could include:

  • Preparing for performances by rehearsing and devising;
  • Performing to live audiences
  • Studying and creating choreography
  • Discussing and interpreting choreography
  • Learning and using other skills such as Physical Theatre, Yoga and Improvisation
  • Taking care of the health and safety of yourself and others, which requires knowledge and observation of physiology and anatomy, as well as safe use of premises and equipment to avoid injury
  • Developing research skills
  • Liaising with arts and dance organisations

This exciting course is taught by professional tutors who have a wide range of experience in the dance industry to support students fully within their chosen career path. This programme offers an ideal starting point for a career in dance before starting the UAL Level 3 Diploma.

In addition to your main programme, you will study English and Maths (if you don't have a C or above in GCSE English or Maths). Depending on your grades on entry, you will study either Functional Skills or GCSEs English and Maths. Please check our English and Maths page for further information

Entry requirements: 

Applicants should have four GCSEs at Grades A* - D (including English), or equivalent. Applicants will also be asked to attend a one day workshop/audition where they will be asked to present a solo dance performance.

Objective: 

This programme offers an excellent first step to a career in the dance industry. The course is for dancers who perhaps do not have extensive technical dance experience but do have the enthusiasm and motivation to improve and succeed.

Assessment: 

Assessment is on-going throughout the course and requires students to complete projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Assessment activities that you may undertake include participating in practical workshops, rehearsals, performances, coursework, research, keeping journals, writing essays, giving presentations, discussing and evaluating work.

Academic progression: 

After successfully completing this course, students could progress onto a full time two year UAL Level 3 Diploma programme at the College, in one of the four pathways of acting, dance, musical theatre or music practice.

Career progression: 

This programme offers an ideal starting point for a career in performing arts prior to the UAL Level 3 Diplomas and Extended Diplomas.
