Level 2 Diploma in Production Arts (Technical Theatre)

This course is for people who are interested in working within the performing arts and creative industries in the technical and design areas
Course description: 

You will become a working member of Platform Productions which is a theatre company based here at college. You will become the backbone of the theatre company through the creative design and smooth operation of shows which are open to the public.

Units on the course include:

  • Working in performing arts
  • Professional development in the performing arts industry
  • Performing arts production process
  • Crewing
  • Lighting operations,
  • Sound operations,
  • The development of drama

You will spend approximately sixteen hours a week either at College or at The Garage with your tutors having taught sessions.  You will be expected to match this time with your own rehearsal, preparation, research and home work per week.  During production periods you will be expected to spend more time at the College in order to undertake and keep to rehearsal and planning schedules.

Our state of the art facilities include a 200 seater theatre with an excellent lighting and sound system and rehearsal space.

You learn by completing projects and some written assignments that are completed only while working on realistic workplace situations, to enable you to gain the experience needed to pursue a career in the Production Industries.

It is essential as a production student that you see as much theatre as you can, therefore we arrange regular trips to the theatres across the county to see a variety of work produced. Termly outings include a range of theatre shows, professional workshops and workplace related activities. 

Annual trips are organised for students and past trips have included New York, Italy, Paris and London.

You are likely to be:

  • responsibility for both the artistic and technical sides of the theatre and it’s productions
  • design of lights, sound and set
  • management of technical teams
  • make and source props
  • operation of sound and lighting equipment
  • crew live performances
  • cue shows
  • ensure all elements of production are operational
  • work closely with performers and directors to ensure artistic vision
  • compliance with strict health and safety guidelines
  • managing the day to day running of the theatre, including front of house duties
Entry requirements: 

Applicants should have four GCSEs at grades A* - G or equivalent, or appropriate work experience.
You will also be expected to attend an interview workshop day, where you will be required to participate in practical activities, prepare and perform a short presentation and undertake a short interview.


This is a vocational, work-related course.


All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is then awarded.
Assessment is on-going throughout the course, and requires you to complete projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations.  Assessment activities that you may undertake include: participating in practical workshops, rehearsals, performances, writing essays, giving presentations, discussing work.

Academic progression: 

This course is valuable if you would like to go into employment or on to further courses.
If you decide to go to college you could move onwards to the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma or apprenticeships. Course options range from sound engineering, lighting design and control, costume design, scenic construction, stage and production management, arts administration, puppetry and props. If you have the production bug there is really no looking back!

Career progression: 

UAL Level 2 Diplomas are valued by employers and further education (colleges).  If you want to get a job straight away you could work in a production job role, for instance as crew for theatres, music venues or any live events venue.
