Level 3 Diploma in Dance

This course is for people who are passionate about developing a career in dance
Course description: 

This is a practical, work related course where you learn through completing projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations and activities. Creative practice is at the core of the program and the course encourages learners to develop their artistic skills. It includes a variety of core and specialist units, including:

  • Principles of Performance
  • Engaging with an Audience
  • Performance Skills and Context 
  • Collaborative Performance Project
  • Preparing for Progression 
  • Exploration of specialist study and context

Throughout the units learners will need to reflect on their practice.

The Key dance styles taught are Contemporary and Jazz; providing you with an excellence grounding prior to further study. You will also be expected to create your own choreography and develop your own practice.You will participate in public performances and become part of our theatre company, Platform Productions. The company’s artistic policy is to provide theatre of the highest quality within the local community and beyond. The level 3 Diploma in Dance is a nationally recognised qualification which is the equivalent to three A Levels.

Key tasks are likely to include:

  • Preparing for performances by rehearsing and devising
  • Performing to live audiences
  • Studying and creating choreography
  • Discussing and interpreting choreography
  • Learning and using other skills such as Physical Theatre,Yoga and Improvisation 
  • Taking care of the health and safety of yourself and others, which requires knowledge and observation of physiology and anatomy, as well as safe use of premises and equipment to avoid injury
  • Developing research skills
  • Running student led Rehearsals
  • Liaising with arts and dance organisations
  • Developing and understanding of the importance of Fitness and Nutrition


All tutors have specialist professional training and experience in the performing arts industry. The college's state of the art facilities include three purpose built dance studios located in the city centre. Each studio is mirrored with a sprung floor, air conditioning and P.A system. Our 200 seated theatre has an excellent lighting and sound system and rehearsal space.

 Termly outings include a range of theatre shows, professional workshops and workplace related performance activities.

To date students have performed at The Norfolk and Norwich Festival,The Lord Mayors Procession,Norwich Castle Museum, The Sainsbury Centre,St Andrews Hall, Norwich Cathedral and many more.

Past students have graduated onto vocational schools such as; London Contemporary, Bird, Laban, Urdang, LIPA, Performers, Masters, Bodyworks, Stella Mann, E15 and universities including: Middlesex, Roehampton, Edge Hill, Bedford and many more

In addition to your main programme, you will study English and Maths (If you have not yet achieved a C or above at GCSE). Depending on your grades on entry, you will study either Functional Skills or GCSEs English and Maths. Please check our English and Maths page for further information  

Entry requirements: 

Applicants should have at least four GCSEs at grades A*-C (including English), or equivalent.
Students will also be expected to attend an audition/interview workshop day, where they will be required to participate in practical activities, perform a prepared audition piece and undertake a short interview.


The course is vocational which means students will undertake the role of a dancer throughout the two years. The course aims to provide suitable training and education for progression to university, vocational dance school or into employment.


Assessment is on-going throughout the course and requires students to complete projects and assignments based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. Assessment activities that students may undertake include; participating in practical workshops, rehearsals, performances, coursework, research, keeping journals, writing essays, giving presentations, discussing and evaluating work.

Academic progression: 

Successful completion of this one year Level 3 Diploma will provide direct entry onto the one year Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dance.  The Level 3 Diploma qualification achieved will be equivalent to 3 AS Levels (and 3 A levels overall if the Level 3 Extended Diploma is subsequently completed).

After this course students can apply to universities and dance schools to further their training in specialist dance styles or performance studies. Staff are able to help with auditions for dance schools. This qualification is fully recognised by higher education institutions.

Career progression: 

After the course, students wishing to go straight into employment could work in entertainment, theatre, performance, dance administration and the fitness industry. To become a professional dancer, a further three years training at university or vocational school is recommended.

Past students have also entered straight into employment including work in the fitness industry and as professional performers.
