Course description: 

The Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy is a technical qualification aimed at developing the knowledge, understanding and technical skills needed for a career as a Sports Massage Therapist, either employed or self employed, working with recent non-acute injuries and/or pre-existing conditions.

It is targeted at practitioners currently working in sport and active leisure, including osteopaths, physiotherapists, sports therapists and sports massage practitioners.

The purpose of this specialist qualification is to enrich your understanding of advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological principles relevant to the application of sports massage. In addition you will develop your advanced palpation skills and those needed to analyse posture and range of movement.

You will develop a range of advanced skills and massage techniques to prevent and manage injury in sport and active leisure. You may have the opportunity to gain additional qualifications such as RockTape Kinesiology.

You may have the opportunity to attend field trips with the City College Norwich Extreme Sports Therapy Unit which  offers pre and post event sports massage to a range of athletes at cycling and triathlon events all over the UK.

You will also learn to critically evaluate massage strategies and methods to inform on your future treatments.

Entry requirements: 

You will need to have six GCSE A* - C.

Level 3 Sports Massage Certificate or equivalent (Swedish Massage, Aromatherapy etc.) will an advantage but not essential.

An understanding of anatomy and physiology is desirable but not essential.

Assessment: 

To achieve this qualification you must successfully undertake and record at least 100 of sports massage. Evidence must demonstrate application of all massage methods that make up this qualification and must be undertaken on a range of clients in different environments. To achieve these hours you will also be able to work with the Extreme Sports Therapy Unit (www.ccnxsports.co.uk) at a range of sports events around the Country.

Your course will be assessed and verified by Centre staff. Work will be set to improve your practical skills, knowledge and understanding. For practical elements, you will be observed by your assessor. All your work must be collected in a portfolio of evidence and cross-referenced to requirements listed in this record of assessment book.

Career progression: 

The Level 4 Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy is focused on competent practitioners employing a range of advanced skills and massage techniques to prevent and manage injury in sport and active leisure. It is anticipated that upon successful completion of this programme you will be equipped to work independently or in a supervisory position as a sports massage practitioner. You will also be able to work for sports clubs, health and fitness centres or consider starting your own business.

Costs: 

This course is a full cost course which means that unfortunately there are no reductions in tuition fees if you are unemployed or in receipt of benefits. We operate a strict no refund policy and you will be liable for the entire fee, even if you withdraw from the course. Please refer to our Rules & Regulations for more information.

In addition to this there are additional costs of

  • A uniform, currently £18.00.
  • Optional qualifications, there will be an additional cost.
  • If you attend any field trips with the CCN Extreme Sports Therapy Unit you will be expected to contribute to food costs.
  • Student insurance through Sports Massage Association to enable you to complete their work placement hours. This is approximately £50
