Free College Meals

Free College Meals

The College offers Free College Meals to all eligible students. A food allowance of £2.50 will be available to you for each day you are in College or on work placements.  Your allowance will normally be loaded onto your student card and can be swiped at any of the College’s cafes and restaurants on the Ipswich Road site.

To make the most of your allowance, you can fill up your water bottle on site for free and use the money to buy a hot meal, rather than snacks and drinks. The allowance must be used on the day and cannot be ‘saved up’. Use it or lose it!

Who is eligible for Free College Meals?

To be eligible you must normally be aged 16-18 and your parents/guardians must be in receipt of one of the following benefits:

  • Income Support
  • Employment Support Allowance (Income related)
  • Income based Job Seekers Allowance
  • Guaranteed Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit with an annual income of less than £16,190
  • Support under Part VI of the immigration and Asylum Act 1999

If you turn 19 during the academic year you remain eligible until the end of the academic year or until your course finishes, whichever is sooner. If you are aged between 19 and 25 and you have an Educational Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan) you will also be eligible provided your parents are in receipt of one of the above benefits.

If you study off site or are on placement - we will arrange to pay the money into your bank account.

How do I apply for Free College Meals?

You need to fill out an application form for Free College Meals which you can pick up from the Advice Shop at College. Alternatively, if you are applying for the 16-19 Bursary Fund you will automatically be assessed for Free College Meals as part of the process.
