The colourful characters and diverse products of Norwich Market have been captured in a highly original Advent calendar for Christmas 2017, thanks to an enterprise project by City College Norwich’s Ticket students and their lecturer Jim Goreham.
Behind each of the 24 windows on the calendar is an illustration by Mr Goreham of a market trader, or traders, who have a stall on the market. The cover features a festive drawing capturing the view across the market with the spire of St Peter Mancroft in the background.
Whilst the artwork has been supplied by Mr Goreham, the Advent calendar has been a team effort by all 16 students on the Ticket course at City College Norwich, with the support of Job Coach Sam Cossey.
The students have been involved in all aspects of the production of the calendar, from approaching stallholders to see if they would like to take part, and photographing them, to having an input on the design, and (from next week) helping to sell the calendar to members of the public.
The Ticket students’ calendar will be available to buy for £5 from their pop-up stall (Stall 14) on Norwich Market, which can be found next to Anderson’s Clothing stall and opposite Brick Pizza, from Monday 13th to Saturday 18th November.
Proceeds from the sale of the calendar will go towards next term’s Ticket enterprise project and a Christmas reward trip for the students.
Ticket is part of the college’s Supported Learning provision for students who have additional learning needs. The course develops students’ confidence, social and employability skills through enterprise challenges, teamwork activities and employment training.
After completing the 1-year course students can progress on to supported employment preparation programmes with Project Search and MINT.
Ticket student Megan Rix, 23, from Poringland, said: “I have enjoyed seeing the Advent calendar coming together.”
Fellow Ticket student Josh Page, 19, from Norwich, added: “I enjoyed going around the market stalls and asking people to be part of our project.”
Jim Goreham, Ticket Course Leader, City College Norwich, commented:
“The students have responded really well to what has turned out to be quite a fast-paced project. It’s been great to see their confidence grow as they have taken ownership of the operation and the outcomes they want from the experience. All of the students have reflected really well on the employability skills picked up so far and are looking forward to developing their selling and money-handling skills in the next phase. It’s been great working with Norwich Market and getting to know many of the stallholders.”
Kristina Fox, manager for Norwich Market said:
“We are delighted that Norwich Market now has its very own advent calendar! It’s been great working with City College students on the project and we look forward to having the calendar available on one of our pop-up stalls – it’ll make a lovely Christmas present.”
