Alumni help make College’s 125th Anniversary Dinner a night to remember

Former students who have gone on to make their names as renowned chefs and restauranteurs teamed up with the current generation of hospitality and catering students, and their lecturers, to put on a memorable dinner to celebrate City College Norwich’s 125th Anniversary.

The event, which was hosted in the College’s Debut Restaurant on Monday 14th November, was attended by more than 80 invited guests, who included past and present students and staff, former principals, governors, the Lord Mayor and the Sheriff of Norwich, and other friends and supporters of the College.

Richard Bainbridge gives students a foretaste of 125th anniversary dinner

Local restaurant owner, winner of the Great British Menu 2015 and former City College Norwich student, Richard Bainbridge, gave a special cookery demonstration to over 40 hospitality and catering students ahead of his return to the Debut Restaurant for the College’s 125th year anniversary dinner on Monday 14th November.

Devour's success helps students earn as well as learn

Devour, a catering company which employs students from City College Norwich, achieved further growth over the last year – with demand for wedding and event catering helping it pass the milestone of having provided a total of 5,500 hours of paid student work.

This has been great news for the 57 City College Norwich students currently on Devour’s books - they not only gain invaluable experience of work to supplement their learning at college, but a much-valued way to earn some extra cash.

Lizzy creates a taste of South Africa to claim third place in national cooking competition

Lizzy Ostler, a Level 2 NVQ Professional Cookery student at City College Norwich who works in the restaurant at Strattons Hotel in Swaffham, has achieved third place in the Cook South Africa! Young Chef of the Year: South African competition.

Lizzy, 17, from Bradenham, achieved this honour in the national final of the student chef competition, which was held at Westminster Kingsway College on Thursday 14 April.  Her achievement is all the more impressive because it was the first time that Lizzy has ever entered a cooking competition.

College’s Debut Restaurant ends year on a high after serving over 1,900 Christmas meals

Students and staff from City College Norwich’s Hotel School have ended the year on a high with the successful completion of Debut Restaurant’s annual Christmas service which has seen the team serve up 280kg of Norfolk turkey, around 14,000 brussels sprouts and 8,000 mince pies.

In total, more than 400 students and 30 staff have prepared and served over 1,900 lunches and dinners to paying customers over a busy three week period. The team have also cleared and washed around 20,000 dirty but empty plates.

National award recognition for Hotel Takeover initiative

City College Norwich’s Hotel School and the Holiday Inn Norwich North are celebrating after their Hotel Takeover initiative scooped the Education Pipeline Award at this year’s Springboard Awards for Excellence. The annual takeover has provided industry specific work experience opportunities for thousands of young people over a 17 year period and sees many hard working students securing jobs as a direct result.

Elle gets a taste for Michelin-star cooking in Raymond Blanc’s restaurant

Elle Land, who combines studying for a Level 3 Hospitality Diploma at City College Norwich with working as a Chef de Partie in the Earlham Arms in Norwich, has completed an unforgettable week’s work experience at the renowned Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat'Saison.

The 18 year old student, who lives in Norwich, created the opportunity on her own initiative after deciding she wanted to experience what it is like to work at the very top of the restaurant business.
